WTF, no I haven’t! I haven’t even tried to upload anything today. tumblr you make sharing music so complicated.. :(— livejamieI’m re-blogging Jamie’s post because after reading it, it got me to thinking and experimenting (to read his full post go here). I can certainly understand the folks at Tumblr being extra cautious in regard to music sharing and the need for some sort of control system for obvious reasons, but there has to be a better method for “keeping it in-house”. What I mean by that is a better way for posting music through the integrated posting methods, rather than resorting to using 3rd party workarounds via some hack.I’ve got several accounts through other services that I could figure out how to embed here, but they don’t fit quite right - there are numerous workarounds you could do at any point, but nothing feels right.Example: After reading Jamie’s post, I thought I’d take a look and see if I could get an audio post working with a drop.io upload. While they have a nice player on the actual drop site for audio tracks, there is no direct embed code I could easily manipulate (there’s some embed code for a widget for people to add files to what I already posted, but nothing for viewing the actual files I posted themselves). After a few attempts I got the player to post by copying out the code and pasting it into a “Video” post-type here, but there were obvious problems with the raw code like formatting and auto-play options (or lack thereof). Simple fact is, I’m not going to fart around with code for any length of time just to post an audio file I find interesting, because it just goes against the grain of the whole tumblelog stream-of-consciousness model.I don’t know what the answer is, but I also know that I have no idea what the issues are behind DMCA restrictions and penalties for site providers. Shit, if I was successful in finding some easy hack for the drop.io file(s) I put up maybe I would have been in some deep shit for “reverse-engineering” site code in the eyes of the RIAA and been in violation of my TOS with Tumblr. It will be interesting to see how issues like this play out in the future though for sure.Oh… the files I put up on drop.io were of Danger Mouse’s The Grey Album, which was a bit controversial in it’s own right, so if anyone wants to see the player I was trying to embed, or just listen to it, go here.

I can certainly understand the folks at Tumblr being extra cautious in regard to music sharing and the need for some sort of control system for obvious reasons, but there has to be a better method for “keeping it in-house”. What I mean by that is a better way for posting music through the integrated posting methods, rather than resorting to using 3rd party workarounds via some hack.

I’ve got several accounts through other services that I could figure out how to embed here, but they don’t fit quite right - there are numerous workarounds you could do at any point, but nothing feels right.
