“You will never be happy if you continue to search for what happiness consists of. You will never live if you are looking for the meaning of life.” - Albert Camus
I hadn’t thought about Albert Camus for quite some time until I created this tumblelog. See that quote up there at the top? “Stupidity has a knack of getting its way” is from his book The Plague, which was first published in 1947. Of course I’m taking liberty in my usage, but it’s a quote that can be applied to many situations to be sure.
I don’t know what made me think of it when I first typed in something in the “Description” box when setting up my first Tumblr theme, but it got me thinking of him again. You can find a ton of his quotes out there on the interweb, but for a great overview of his philosophy (existentialism to the uninitiated) and body of work can be found at good ‘ol Wikipedia here.
He was a huge inspiration to me when I started college back in 1989 as a Political Science/Philosophy double major. Back then I probably thought I was clever sitting in coffee houses smoking cigarettes and reading The Stranger, making sure everyone could see the cover of the book as I sat there. As I moved forward in my life, I found that his thoughts still resonated as much, if not more, than when I first discovered them. Here’s another one of his quotes in closing should anyone feel the need to comment on this post:
“Don’t believe your friends when they ask you to be honest with them. All they really want is to be maintained in the good opinion they have of themselves.”
;)
